Fingerprint found on cellphone after UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killing being analyzed: NYPD

A fingerprint was found on a cellphone after the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killing was analyzed, according to New York Police Department (NYPD) officials.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told CBS New York on Tuesday night that law enforcement officials are analyzing a fingerprint that was found on the cellphone following UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killing last week in New York City.

“We have DNA. We have one … we have fingerprints that’s also being processed,” Kenny told CBS. “There were no fingerprints on the bullets at this time, but we did have one fingerprint on the cellphone that was recovered.”

Kenny did not say if the fingerprint matched those of Luigi Mangione, a suspect who was accused of killing Thompson in Manhattan. Mangione was arrested and charged in Pennsylvania on Monday after authorities were tipped off by a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pa.

Authorities found a gun, a silencer and a fake ID that matched the information Mangione used to check in to a hostel before Thompson’s killing took place last week.

New York prosecutors are working with Pennsylvania’s Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks to extradite Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, to New York where he faces a murder charge.

Kenny said that apart from finding the fingerprint, investigators discovered a Faraday Bag, which is a sealed unit that restricts police tracking.

“You can put your phone in there so we can’t track your phone. It doesn’t transmit a signal. It blocks the signal,” Kenny said late Tuesday. “In essence, it’s like if you wrapped your phone in aluminum foil and put it in a bag.”

Kenny added that Mangione might have suffered from an injury last year.

“We’re learning that he did possibly suffer an accident that caused him to visit the emergency room back on July 4, 2023,” he said.
