More than 24,000 pounds of chicken sausage recalled after customers find plastic in food

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A Massachusetts food producer is recalling more than 24,000 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken sausage products that may be contaminated with pieces of plastic.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the recall on July 17. Kayem Foods Inc. out of Chelsea, Mass., is recalling 24,173 pounds of chicken sausage products that had been shipped to retailers nationwide.

The FSIS said Kayem Foods reported three people had sent in complaints concerning the foreign material, though there were no injuries.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” part of the alert reads. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

Consumers can identify the recalled sausage by the packaging and its markings, according to the alert:

The sausages are sealed in 11-ounce vacuum-packed packages marketed as “All natural al fresco chicken sausage sweet apple with Vermont made syrup”

Recalled packages bear the establishment number “P-7839” printed inside the USDA mark of inspection

Recalled packages are printed with a with the lot code “179” and a “USE/FRZ BY” date of Oct. 1, 2025 on the back label of the package

Anyone with additional questions is being instructed to contact Kayem Foods Inc. at 617-889-1600 (extension 247) or reach out via email to jwest@kayem.com.

Those with questions for the USDA can call the USDA’s Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854, or email mphotline@usda.gov.
